The proposed cycle trail will run from Horeke in the west located on the upper reaches of the Hokianga harbour, through Kaikohe the heart of Ngapuhi, and on to Opua located on the Bay of Islands. See the map showing the proposed route supplied by the Ministry of Tourism.

History of the Trail - Community Board Involvement | |
| The matter of clearing the rail corridor of noxious plants and creating a walkway between Okaihau and Kaikohe was discussed by the Western Community Board at its meeting in June 2008. The Board approved the project in principle and approved a set aside a small amount of money to hold in reserve to support community initiatives. The Board then proceeded to identify all land holders adjacent to the rail corridor to ascertain their thoughts about the proposal. | |
